Mini Dental Implants

Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants are small implants that do not need to be completely inserted into your jawbone. Mini dental implants have two parts, comprising a titanium post and a socket with a rubber O-ring that attaches the tooth replacement to the post. A mini implant is about 1.8 to 3.3 mm in diameter and 10 to 15 mm long.

What Are Mini Dental Implants?

A mini dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is made from titanium. It is similar to other implants but smaller. Titanium is the preferred choice of material for mini implants as it is well accepted by the body and has the ability to fuse with the jawbone.

Mini dental implants are less expensive compared to traditional implants. They can be used in cases where the ridge is too narrow for full-sized dental implants. The small dimensions of mini implants allow for more flexibility when there is a significant amount of bone loss. They also can be fixed immediately.

How Long Do Mini Dental Implants Last?

Mini dental implants can last just as long as traditional implants. With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, they can last a lifetime.

What Is the Procedure for Mini Dental Implants?

The mini dental implant procedure is relatively simple and performed under local anesthesia. It is a painless and minimally invasive surgical technique that is done under controlled conditions. Mini dental implants provide a strong, solid foundation for securing dentures. Some patients may experience slight discomfort for 48 hours after the procedure. Most patients can resume normal activity and eat a few hours after the surgery.

What Is the MDI Denture Stabilization System?

The MDI System comprises a small titanium alloy implant that serves as the root of the tooth replacement and a retaining fixture fused into your denture base. The head of the mini implant is shaped like a ball. The retaining fixture that acts like a socket has a rubber O-ring. This O-ring snaps over the ball when the denture is placed and holds the denture firmly in place. Once installed, the denture gently rests on the gum tissue.

How Do You Maintain Mini Dental Implants?

  • Mini dental implants must be cleaned and brushed just like natural teeth.
  • Brush at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Thoroughly brush around the implant crown and between the teeth.
  • Use an interdental brush to clean hard-to-reach places.
  • Floss daily using waxed floss or tape or implant floss.
  • Ultrasonic cleaners containing peroxide can help ensure the retaining fixtures stay germ-free.
  • Regular checkups with your dentist are also essential.
