How to Recognize and Treat a Tooth Infection

People around the globe ask dentists how to know when to visit a dentist. A simple and obvious reply could be: you will know, your body will tell you. The teeth will scream loud enough for you to understand that you need to visit a dentist as soon as possible. Just like you would know that you are not feeling well, you will know when your teeth require special attention.

Okay, jokes apart, let's guide you about a tooth infection! Usually, tooth pain or a need to visit a dentist occurs when you have a wisdom tooth coming or when there is a long-pending cavity. However, a tooth infection, also known as an abscessed tooth or dental abscess, can also push you to visit a dentist due to the extreme pain that it causes.

Here, we have broken down everything for you. Keep reading to know how to recognize and treat a tooth infection.

What is a dental abscess?

A dental abscess is a sac full of pus and bacteria. It occurs due to unhygienic oral health practices. The bacteria invade your mouth and cause infection, which can lead to an abscess.

Symptoms of tooth infection:

The most common symptom of tooth infection is pain. However, this pain can spread to other parts of your body as well. It can extend into the jaw, face, and neck.

Other signs:

  • Higher tooth sensitivity
  • Tenderness around the tooth
  • Swelling of the mouth, jaw, or face
  • Bursting of salty, smelly fluid in the mouth

What if the infection spreads?

If left untreated for days, it can cause:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Stiff neck
  • Changes in consciousness, mood, or vision

How to treat tooth infection?

In usual cases, you can take prescribed antibiotics. The infectious tooth will recover automatically. However, if you face severe affliction, it is recommended to see a dentist immediately.
