Habits That Put Your Oral Health At Risk

Teeth are the strongest and hardest substance in your body. However, they are not indestructible. Habits you develop can cause damage to your teeth. Here are some habits that can damage your oral health:

  • Smoking

Tobacco products contain nicotine and are highly addictive. Nicotine causes blood vessels in the gums to shrink, which can cause them to recede from the teeth. This can lead to a higher risk of developing gum disease. Additionally, tobacco products cause bad breath and tooth discoloration. The chemicals in cigarettes can also stain the teeth a yellow or brown color over time. Some research has indicated that smoking may contribute to oral cancers since it contains at least 60 known carcinogens. Handling tobacco with your mouth can also cause gum recession as well as tooth loss due to the abrasive nature of the smoke on the enamel of your teeth and the soft tissues of the mouth.

Cigarette smoking also leads to an increased risk of heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, and other lung diseases. It is currently the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. If you have the habit of smoking, quit it at the earliest.

  • Teeth Grinding

Bruxism is the medical term for clenching or grinding of your teeth. People often do this at night in their sleep, making it hard to pinpoint the exact cause. Some scientists believe bruxism may be related to stress, anxiety, a misaligned bite, abnormal arousal in the central nervous system during sleep, or even sleep apnea. Other common signs and symptoms include headaches, worn-down teeth, and broken fillings and crowns. Sometimes people also experience pain in the jaw and neck. While bruxism may seem to be merely an annoyance, it can actually lead to some serious oral health problems. The constant pressure can cause the teeth to wear down over time, chipping them and wearing away enamel. The pressure of clenching can also place stress on the temporomandibular joint, which can lead to painful symptoms and severe damage to the joint itself. Prolonged bruxism can lead to damaged and even fractured teeth!

  • Chewing Ice

This is because it can cause the enamel to wear thin or break off. This leaves you exposed to hot and cold foods and drinks, increasing the chances that you will develop a cavity at some point in time.

  • Nail Biting

Nail biting is a bad habit that many people engage in. However, it can be damaging to your oral health. When you bite your nails, you can cause your teeth to wear down. The constant pressure placed on them during nail biting can lead to chipping or cracking over time. You may also develop pain in your jaw from clenching your teeth as you bite. So, quit the habit at the earliest. 

  • Aggressive Brushing and Flossing

Some people use more force when they brush or floss their teeth than is necessary. While this can be effective at removing plaque and buildup on your teeth, it can also cause damage to your teeth and gums. Using too much force can irritate your gums and cause bleeding to occur in them. It may also weaken your tooth enamel by wearing it down.

  • Using Teeth As Tools

Your teeth are for eating and talking and not prying or pulling anything apart! Avoid damaging your teeth by using them as tools. Whenever you use your teeth to tear something open, you risk breaking a tooth or causing severe gum damage. Even if the tooth isn’t damaged, you could be doing serious damage to your gums or mouth by tearing open the skin inside your mouth. If you do need to remove something from between your teeth, reach for floss instead of using your hand or finger to pull at it.
